Live act vs DJ set: what's the difference, and which should you go to?

A quick guide to the two ways electronic music reaches a stage — and what to expect from each.

You'll see both on Indian line-ups — some artists billed as a "DJ set," others as "live." The difference is real, and knowing it helps you pick the right night. Here's the quick version.

The DJ set

A DJ selects and blends existing tracks in real time, reading the crowd and building a journey out of other people's records (and often their own). The art is in the selection, the mixing and the pacing — a great DJ can take a room somewhere over hours. This is the backbone of club culture and most India nightlife.

The live set

A live electronic act performs their own music on the spot — using synths, drum machines, controllers and vocals to build and mutate tracks in the moment. It's less about crowd-reading flexibility and more about witnessing an artist perform their own work, often with visuals built around it. Expect something closer to a concert than a club night.

Which to choose

Want a long, flexible, dance-all-night journey? Go for the DJ. Want to see a specific artist perform their own music as a show? Go live. Both are brilliant — they're just different experiences, and the best festivals give you both.
