The rise of the sundowner: India's favourite way to start the night

Not every great music moment happens after midnight. The sundowner — the sunset session that eases you from day into night — has become one of India's most beloved nightlife formats, and it's easy to see why.

A sundowner is low-commitment and high-reward: great music, golden-hour light, a relaxed crowd, and a drink in hand as the sun goes down. The soundtrack leans warm and melodic — deep house, afro house, downtempo — perfectly matched to the mood of the hour. It's accessible in a way a 2am club night isn't, pulling a broader, more mixed crowd.

Rooftop bars, beach clubs, poolside decks and lakeside venues are the natural homes of the sundowner. Cities with a view — Goa's coast, Udaipur's lakes, the metros' skylines — have made it a signature. It also works beautifully as the opening act to a bigger night.
