Sprawling across a 180-metre hill, Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India and perhaps the most storied. For centuries the capital of Mewar, it witnessed some of the most heroic and tragic episodes in Rajput history — sieges, sacrifices and the legendary defiance of rulers like Rani Padmini.
The vast complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains palaces, temples, water bodies and two soaring victory towers. The Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) and the older Kirti Stambh rise above it all, covered in exquisite carving.
The fort is enormous — driving between the monuments inside is common. It's a longer day trip from Udaipur; an early start helps. The history here is deeply woven into Rajasthani identity.
