Once the sole water source for the desert city of Jaisalmer, Gadisar Lake is a man-made reservoir that has become one of the town's most peaceful spots. Ringed by small temples, shrines and ghats, and entered through a beautifully carved golden-stone archway, it's an oasis in the arid landscape.

At sunrise the lake is at its best — soft light on the golden shrines, migratory birds on the water in winter, and boats drifting across the calm surface. It's a serene way to bookend the intensity of the fort and desert.

Don't miss

  • The ornate Tilon-ki-Pol gateway at the entrance.
  • Sunrise over the lake and its shrines.
  • A gentle paddle-boat ride and winter birdwatching.

Good to know

Early morning is the ideal time — quiet, cool and beautifully lit. A calm contrast to the busy fort lanes nearby.
