Deep in a forested Aravalli valley stands one of the most astonishing temples in India. The main Chaumukha temple at Ranakpur, dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara Adinatha and built in the 15th century, is carved entirely from light-coloured marble and supported by 1,444 pillars — and, famously, no two are carved alike.
The effect inside is otherworldly: a forest of intricately sculpted columns, domed ceilings dripping with detail, and shifting light that seems to make the whole structure glow. It's considered a masterpiece of Jain temple architecture.
Tourists are usually admitted from around midday, after morning worship. Dress modestly, remove shoes and leather items, and expect a calm, reverent atmosphere. Commonly combined with Kumbhalgarh in one day trip.
