Bass music in India: dubstep, drum & bass and the low-end faithful
Heavier, faster and more aggressive — a guide to India's committed bass-music underground.
Not everyone wants a groove — some people want to feel the floor shake. Bass music, spanning dubstep, drum & bass and their many mutations, has a smaller but fiercely loyal following in India, and it's some of the most physically intense music you can experience live.
The family
Dubstep is built on massive, wobbling low-end and half-time drops — heavy, aggressive and cathartic. Drum & bass is its faster cousin, all breakneck breakbeats and rolling sub-bass, demanding serious stamina from a dancer. Together they form the harder-edged wing of India's electronic scene.
The Indian scene
Homegrown bass artists and a dedicated network of promoters have kept the sound alive across the metros, and India has produced globally recognised talent in this space. The crowd is younger, more energetic, and there for the sheer physical thrill of a big sound system pushed to its limits.
Worth trying
If techno feels too restrained and commercial feels too safe, bass music is the adrenaline option. Find a night with a proper rig and experience it the way it's meant to be felt — in your chest.
