EDM in India: the big-room boom that opened the floodgates

Festival main-stage EDM introduced a generation to dance music. Where it stands now, and what it built.

For a huge share of India's current party crowd, the gateway drug was big-room EDM — the euphoric, drop-heavy, main-stage festival sound that exploded across the country and turned dance music into a mainstream youth obsession.

The boom

The 2010s festival wave — driven by massive events and touring superstar DJs — did something profound: it made electronic music aspirational and accessible to millions of young Indians at once. Big-room EDM, with its huge builds and cathartic drops, was the perfect introduction — immediate, emotional and impossible to ignore.

Where it is now

As the crowd matured, tastes fragmented. Many of those early EDM fans moved toward techno, house and afro house, seeking something deeper. But big-room and commercial EDM still command the biggest festival main stages and the largest single-artist shows — it remains the sound of the spectacle.

The legacy

Whatever the purists say, EDM built the audience. The thriving underground of today exists because a generation first fell in love with dance music on a festival main stage. That's a legacy worth respecting.
