House music, explained: the genre everything else grew out of

Before techno, before EDM, there was house. A guide to the foundational sound of club culture — and its Indian life.

House is the granddaddy of dance music — the Chicago-born genre from which almost everything on a modern dancefloor descends. Understanding house is understanding the DNA of club culture itself, and it remains one of the most versatile sounds you'll hear out.

The essence

House is built on a warm four-on-the-floor beat, soulful vocals or samples, and a groove that's more about feel than intensity. It spans a huge range — deep house is mellow and hypnotic, tech house pushes toward the club's harder edge, and soulful and vocal house lean into emotion and melody.

Why it endures

House is endlessly adaptable. It can soundtrack a sunset lounge or a peak-time club, a rooftop or a warehouse. That flexibility is why, decades after it began, house is still the backbone of the global scene — and increasingly of India's.

On Indian floors

Tech house and deep house have huge followings in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Goa, and the sound blends beautifully with the afro house wave. For newcomers, house is the friendliest entry into underground dance music — groovy, warm and immediately danceable.
