Unusually for Rajasthan, Junagarh Fort was built not on a hilltop but on the flat desert plains — and defended so well by its moat and walls that it was never conquered. Begun in 1589, it has survived the centuries remarkably intact, and its interiors are among the most sumptuous in the state.

Behind the imposing exterior lies a series of exquisite palaces, courtyards and pavilions decorated with intricate paintings, mirror-work, gold leaf and carved stone. The Anup Mahal, Phool Mahal and Chandra Mahal show Rajput craftsmanship at its most lavish.

Don't miss

  • The opulent Anup Mahal with its gold-and-red decoration.
  • The mirror-work and painted chambers throughout.
  • The vintage aircraft and royal collections in the museum.

Good to know

The audio guide adds a lot to the visit. Bikaner is off the main tourist trail, so the fort is often pleasantly uncrowded. Don't leave town without trying its famous namkeen (savoury snacks) and sweets.
