Rising above the historic Mylapore neighbourhood, the Kapaleeshwarar Temple is Chennai's spiritual heart — a classic example of Dravidian architecture dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its towering gopuram (gateway tower) is a dazzling, riotously colourful pyramid of carved deities and figures.

Inside, the temple is alive with ritual, music and the scent of jasmine and incense. The surrounding Mylapore district — with its traditional houses, flower markets and the temple tank — is one of the most atmospheric corners of the city.

Don't miss

  • The vividly painted, sculpture-covered gopuram.
  • The temple tank and the old Mylapore streets.
  • The colour and energy of festival days, if your timing aligns.

Good to know

Remove shoes and dress respectfully. Non-Hindus are welcome in most areas. Mylapore's flower market and filter coffee spots make a lovely add-on.
