Stretching along the Bay of Bengal, Marina Beach is one of the longest urban beaches in the world and the great public space of Chennai. It's not a swimming beach — strong currents make that dangerous — but a place for the whole city to walk, play, fly kites and eat as the sun rises or sets.
The wide promenade is lined with statues, historic buildings and food stalls serving local favourites like sundal and bajji. At dawn, joggers and fishermen share the sand; by evening, it becomes a lively carnival.
Do not swim — the currents are dangerous. It's for strolling and snacking, not bathing. Mornings and evenings are the pleasant times in Chennai's heat.
