One of the most unusual temples in the world sits in the town of Deshnoke, near Bikaner. The Karni Mata Temple is home to some 25,000 sacred rats — known as kabas — who scurry freely across its marble floors and are worshipped and protected as holy, believed to be reincarnated devotees of the goddess Karni Mata.

Behind an ornate silver gate and marble façade, the temple is a genuinely singular experience: pilgrims move barefoot among the rats, and spotting one of the rare white rats is considered especially auspicious. It's a striking testament to India's diversity of belief.

Don't miss

  • The sacred rats moving freely through the temple.
  • The chance to spot a rare white rat (considered very lucky).
  • The beautifully carved silver doors and marble façade.

Good to know

You must go barefoot inside, as at any temple — a real test of nerve here. It's considered lucky if a rat runs over your feet. Not for the squeamish, but an unforgettable, respectful cultural experience.
