Built by the Chandela dynasty between the 9th and 11th centuries, the temples of Khajuraho are among the finest achievements of Indian art and architecture — a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous worldwide for the extraordinary quality and sensuality of their sculpture. Every surface teems with gods, celestial dancers, animals and, most famously, intricately carved erotic figures.
Far from mere titillation, the carvings celebrate the full spectrum of life and are executed with breathtaking skill. The Western Group, dominated by the soaring Kandariya Mahadev temple, is the best preserved and most spectacular.
The Western Group is the essential visit and the only ticketed one. A guide greatly enriches the sculpture's meaning. The annual dance festival (usually Feb) is a beautiful time to visit.
