The Konark Sun Temple is one of the most awe-inspiring monuments in India — a 13th-century masterpiece conceived as the gigantic chariot of Surya, the sun god, drawn by seven stone horses and riding on 24 intricately carved wheels. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, its scale and artistry are staggering.
The famous stone wheels double as functioning sundials, and the entire temple, covered in exquisite carvings of daily life, deities and dancers, is a triumph of Kalinga architecture. Though the main tower has collapsed over the centuries, what remains is monumental.
A guide helps decode the symbolism and the sundials. It pairs naturally with Puri (Jagannath Temple) and the beach. The December Konark Dance Festival is spectacular.
