The Great Rann of Kutch is one of India's most otherworldly landscapes — a seemingly endless expanse of cracked white salt flats that merge with the sky at the horizon. In the monsoon it floods; in winter it dries into a dazzling white desert that glows almost luminous under a full moon.

Each winter the region hosts the Rann Utsav, a vibrant festival of tented accommodation, Kutchi handicrafts, folk music and dance that has made this remote frontier accessible and unforgettable. The surrounding Kutch region is also famed for its exquisite embroidery and artisan villages.

Good to know

The white desert is near the sensitive Pakistan border — a permit is required (easily arranged). It's best in winter; the full-moon nights are the most magical. Nights get cold — pack layers.
