The Ajmer Sharif Dargah is among the holiest Sufi shrines on earth — the resting place of the revered 13th-century saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. For over 800 years, pilgrims of every faith have travelled here to seek blessings, making it one of India's most powerful symbols of shared devotion.
The complex, with its silver gates, marble courtyards and great domed tomb, hums with constant activity — the scent of roses, the offering of chadars, and above all the soul-stirring qawwali music sung at the shrine. During the annual Urs festival, it draws vast crowds from across the subcontinent.
Cover your head before entering (cloths are available), and be prepared for large crowds and narrow, busy approach lanes. Guardians may offer to help with offerings — agree any amount clearly beforehand.
