Crowning a rugged hill above Maota Lake, Amber Fort (or Amer) is the spectacular former capital of the Kachhwaha rulers and one of the finest fort-palaces in India. Its honey-coloured sandstone and marble walls climb the ridge in tiers of courtyards, gateways and halls, all reflected in the lake below.
Inside, the palace is a feast of Rajput and Mughal artistry — the dazzling Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) that glitters from a single candle flame, the ornate Ganesh Pol gateway, and airy pavilions catching the breeze. It's part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
Go early to beat both the heat and the crowds. You can walk up the ramp or take a jeep; please avoid elephant rides. A composite ticket covers several Jaipur monuments if you're seeing more.
