In the village of Abhaneri, an unassuming entrance opens onto one of the most mesmerising structures in India: Chand Baori, a stepwell dating back over a thousand years. Descending some 13 storeys into the earth, its walls are lined with around 3,500 narrow steps in a precise, dizzying zig-zag geometry.

Built to conserve water and provide a cool refuge from the desert heat, the stepwell is both an engineering marvel and a hypnotic work of art — its symmetrical steps casting ever-shifting patterns of light and shadow. A facing pavilion adds carved beauty to the scene.

Don't miss

  • The astonishing symmetry of the 3,500 steps.
  • The carved royal pavilion and galleries facing the well.
  • The nearby Harshat Mata Temple.

Good to know

It lies roughly between Jaipur and Agra, making it a popular stop on that route. You view the well from the top and galleries — descending the steps is generally not permitted. A short but unforgettable visit.
