The Charminar is Hyderabad — a majestic square monument with four soaring minarets, built in 1591 to mark the founding of the city. Its graceful arches and intricate stucco work anchor the historic old city, and it's as central to Hyderabad's identity as the Taj is to Agra.

Around its base swirls one of India's great bazaars, and the monument is at its most magical in the evening when floodlit. Climb up for views over the teeming old city and the nearby Mecca Masjid.

Don't miss

  • The four-minaret monument, floodlit after dark.
  • The surrounding Laad Bazaar and Mecca Masjid.
  • The views over the old city from the upper level.

Good to know

The old-city lanes are congested — go on foot. Combine with Laad Bazaar shopping and Hyderabad's legendary biryani nearby.
