Hidden in a narrow gorge in the Aravalli hills just outside Jaipur, Galtaji is an atmospheric complex of temples, pavilions and sacred water tanks (kunds) fed by a natural spring. Pilgrims come to bathe in the holy waters, believed to have purifying powers.

The site earned its 'Monkey Temple' nickname from the large troops of macaques that live here, tumbling around the tanks and pavilions. Set against pink-stone cliffs, with the city visible in the distance from the upper Sun Temple, it's a wonderfully offbeat escape from Jaipur's busier monuments.

Don't miss

  • The sacred spring-fed water tanks and the pilgrims who bathe there.
  • The hilltop Surya (Sun) Temple and its views over Jaipur.
  • The resident monkey troops (keep food and belongings secure).

Good to know

Watch your belongings and any food around the monkeys — they're bold. The walk up rewards you with lovely views. A great choice for something quieter and more atmospheric.
