Rising above Mysuru, Chamundi Hill is crowned by the Sri Chamundeshwari Temple, dedicated to the goddess after whom the hill is named and revered as the patron deity of the Mysore royal family. The climb — or drive — up is rewarded with sweeping views over the city and palace below.

The devout ascend the roughly 1,000 stone steps, passing the huge monolithic Nandi (the sacred bull) carved from a single rock partway up. The colourful temple gopuram and the hilltop panorama make it a rewarding half-day trip.

Don't miss

  • The views over Mysuru from the summit.
  • The giant monolithic Nandi bull on the steps.
  • The ornate Chamundeshwari Temple gopuram.

Good to know

You can drive up or climb the steps (barefoot for the devout). Mornings are cooler and clearer. Queues at the temple can be long on weekends and festival days.
