Hidden in the hill station of Mount Abu — Rajasthan's only hill station — the Dilwara Temples are, for many, the finest example of marble craftsmanship anywhere in India. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, this group of five Jain temples looks modest from outside, but the interiors are simply astonishing.
Every ceiling, pillar, arch and panel is carved from white marble into lace-like detail so fine that the stone seems almost translucent. The lotus-shaped central ceiling of the Vimal Vasahi temple is a particular masterpiece. Photography isn't allowed — you simply have to stand and marvel.
Tourists are admitted only in the afternoon, after morning worship. Photography, leather items and phones are not permitted inside. Dress modestly. It's the highlight of any Mount Abu visit.
