Hampi is like nowhere else on earth — a vast, dreamlike landscape where the magnificent ruins of Vijayanagara, once one of the largest and richest cities in the world, are scattered across a boulder-strewn terrain of surreal beauty. At its 16th-century peak this was a metropolis of half a million people; today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site of temples, palaces and bazaars slowly reclaimed by the rocks.
The Virupaksha Temple still hums with worship, the Vittala Temple complex holds the iconic stone chariot and 'musical' pillars, and sunrise or sunset over the giant granite boulders is unforgettable. It's a place to explore slowly, on foot, by bike or coracle across the river.
The ruins are spread over a large area — hire a bike, scooter or guide. It gets very hot midday; explore at dawn and dusk. The 'Hippie Island' side across the river has a mellow traveller vibe (seasonal).
