Few forts in the world make an entrance like Mehrangarh. Rising 120 metres of unbroken cliff above the blue houses of Jodhpur, its ramparts seem carved from the very rock. Founded in 1459, it remains one of the largest and most magnificent forts in India — and one of the best preserved.

Within its walls, a superb museum occupies a series of exquisitely decorated palaces — the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal — filled with palanquins, arms, paintings and royal treasures. From the ramparts, the view over the indigo-washed old city is unforgettable.

Don't miss

  • The view over Jodhpur's blue houses from the ramparts.
  • The opulent Phool Mahal and Sheesh Mahal palaces.
  • The excellent audio guide, included with foreign tickets.

Good to know

The audio tour is genuinely one of the best in India — use it. There's a zip-line circuit for the adventurous. Sunset over the blue city from here is spectacular.
